Houston is the fourth-largest city in the United States of America and the largest city in the state of Texas. As of the 2009 U.S. Census estimate, the city had a population of 2.3 million.
By 1910, Houston's population had reached 78,800, almost doubling from a decade before. An integral part of the city were African Americans, who numbered 23,929 or nearly one-third of the residents. They were developing a strong professional class based then in the Fourth Ward.
Since the 1990s, as a result of the recession, Houston has made efforts to diversify its economy by focusing on aerospace and health care/biotechnology and by reducing its dependence on the petroleum industry. In 1997, Houstonians elected Lee P. Brown as the city's first African American mayor.
Many annual events celebrate the diverse cultures of Houston. The largest and longest running is the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, held over 20 days from late February to early March, which happens to be the largest annual Livestock Show and Rodeo anywhere in the world. Another large celebration is the annual night-time Houston Pride Parade, held at the end of June. Other annual events include the Houston Greek Festival, Art Car Parade, the Houston Auto Show, the Houston International Festival, and the Bayou City Art Festival, which is considered to be one of the top five art festivals in the United States.
Venues across Houston regularly host local and touring hip hop, rock, blues, country, dubstep, and Tejano musical acts. While Houston has never been a widely renowned for its music scene, Houston hip-hop has become a significant, independent music scene, influencing some larger Southern hip hop and gangsta rap communities. Houston is also the home of chopped and screwed music.
Prominent artists from Houston include pop and R&B group Destiny's Child. Houston also had fledgling blues and folk scenes in the sixties and seventies. Notable blues performers included Lightnin' Hopkins, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, "Texas" Johnny Brown, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Albert Collins, Johnny Copeland, and Joe "Guitar" Hughes; many of whom recorded with hometown music label Peacock Records.
Houston's murder rate ranked 46th of U.S. cities with a population over 250,000 in 2005 (per capita rate of 16.3 murders per 100,000 population). Houston has experienced a significant rise in crime, which the Houston Police Department partly attributed to an influx of people from New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.
Houston, due to its size and proximity to major illegal drug exporting nations, is a significant hub for trafficking of cocaine, marijuana, heroin, MDMA, and methamphetamine.
Within the Houston's historic Third Ward community is Texas Southern University (TSU). Founded in 1927, it is a historically black four-year university with a pharmacy school and the Thurgood Marshall School of Law.
During the summer months, it is common for the temperature to reach over 90 °F, with an average of 99 days per year above 90 °F. Winters in Houston are fairly temperate. The average high in January, the coldest month, is 62 °F, while the average low is 39 °F. Snowfall is generally rare. Houston receives a high amount of rainfall annually, averaging about 54 inches a year. These rains tend to cause floods over portions of the city.

Submissions now open for the 2017 Houston Black Film Festival. The Houston BFF is a celebration of cultural diversity, community outreach, and the art of visual storytelling. Our goal is to offer a creative outlet for independent storytellers and connect them with industry professionals within the entertainment capital of the world.
The Houston Black Film Festival was founded in 2004 to bring a collective, cohesive and creative environment for the Houston, Texas Film Mecca; the fourth largest metropolitan city in the United States. Our focus is to proactively enhance the process of developing, producing and distributing films by black filmmakers.
Our goal is to also bring a unique dominion to films by providing a program that will directly impact the viability and quality of films introduced to the market by the implementation of such special projects as The Book to Film Screenplay Search Project, which aims to become an amenable bridge between proven published authors and filmmakers in hopes of bringing more book to film adaptations by writers of color to the big and small screen.
Our commitment is to quality over quantity when selecting films to showcase. These features, shorts, documentaries, music video, documentaries, experimental films and more will be worthy of a platform for the Houston community and beyond. This is a momentous occasion for our city as we connect with filmmakers and immerse them in the Houston storytelling community of Houston based writers. The four day festival includes an array of social engagements in various venues around our great city.
