A Taste of Staten Island, New York

did you know?
DID YOU KNOW THESE FACTS ABOUT STATEN ISLAND?
  1. Staten Island is one of the five boroughs of New York City, in the U.S. state of New York, located in the southwest part of the city. Staten Island is separated from New Jersey by the Arthur Kill and the Kill Van Kull, and from the rest of New York by New York Bay. With a population of 468,730, Staten Island is the least populated of the boroughs but is the third-largest in area at 59 sq mi.

  2. Staten Island is home to the oldest black settlement, Sandy Ground.

  3. Staten Island is home to the largest Liberian population outside of Liberia.

  4. The North Shore — especially the neighborhoods of St. George, Tompkinsville, Clifton, and Stapleton — is the most urban part of the island; it contains the officially designated St. George Historic District and the St. Paul’s Avenue-Stapleton Heights Historic District, which feature large Victorian houses. The East Shore is home to the 2.5-mile F.D.R. Boardwalk, the fourth-longest in the world. The South Shore developed rapidly beginning in the 1960s and 1970s, and is mostly suburban in character. The West Shore is the least populated and most industrial part of the island.

  5. The vast majority of the borough's African American and Hispanic residents live north of the Staten Island Expressway, or Interstate 278.

  6. The median income for a household is $55,039, and the median income for a family was $64,333.

black/african american opinion

Hello again! I think you did a great job adding the Staten Island page to the website but I think you should provide more details on the Sandy Ground community such as how it was formed by black farmers and their families from Maryland but the community was ruined in 1963 after a fire. All that remains are a few houses and the Rossville AME Zion Church. Most descendants have moved to the Island's North Shore or New Jersey but return to the area for church services.
