A Taste of Toronto, Canada

did you know?
DID YOU KNOW THESE FACTS ABOUT TORONTO?

  1. Toronto is the most populous city in Canada and the provincial capital of Ontario. According to the 2011 Census, the city had 2,615,060 residents.

  2. In the mid 19th century, Toronto was a major destination for runaway American slaves, escaping persecution and a life in bondage. Aside from their enslaved counterparts, Toronto was also a very popular settlement for free African Americans, who thought that they would not be able to achieve success south of the border. Most black American migrants settled in St. John's Ward, while other settled in nearby York Township (which was later amalgamated into the city of Toronto.

  3. By 1850, the major Toronto street, King Street, was the centre of Toronto's black community and businesses. Today, the majority of black-owned businesses in Toronto can be found on Eglington Avenue.

  4. After strict restrictions on immigration were eliminated in 1962, Toronto became a major destination for immigrants from the Anglophone Caribbean, predominantly Jamaica. To this day, the majority of Black Torontonians are either recent immigrants or a generation or two removed from a recent immigrant.
