A Taste of Hammond, Indiana

did you know?
DID YOU KNOW THESE FACTS ABOUT HAMMOND?
  1. Hammond is a city in Lake County, Indiana, United States. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The population was 80,830 at the 2010 census.

  2. The Hammond Pros was one of the America's earliest professional football teams. When the American Professional Football League was formed in 1920, the Hammond Pros was a charter member, as it also was when the league changed its name to National Football League in 1922. However, four years later, when the NFL decided to reduce the number of teams, it did so by simply folding smaller franchises; the Hammond Pros (which never played a home game in Hammond) was moved to Akron, Ohio, and became the Akron Pros in 1925. During the four years of the Hammond Pros' existence, the NFL had nine African-American players, six of whom played for the Pros. The NFL's first African-American head coach was Hall-of-Famer coach Fritz Pollard of the Pros.

  3. The median income for a household in the city was $35,528, and the median income for a family was $42,221.

Hammond NAACP Branch Presents the Sounds of Motown

The Hammond, Indiana, NAACP Branch will present noted Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter and The Sounds of Motown at its annual Freedom Fund Banquet.

About the Event
The Hammond NAACP Branch’s success has continued because of the existing partnership among business, educational, religious, civic, and community organizations. We will hold our annual Freedom Fund Banquet on Saturday, September 12, 2015, at the Dynasty Banquet Hall, 4141 Calumet Avenue, Hammond, Indiana. The cost of an admittance ticket is $50. Social hour begins at noon, with the luncheon starting shortly thereafter.

The guest speaker for the event will be Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter. Prosecutor Carter has long been active in community affairs, serving in many capacities with charitable associations, legal groups, and professional organizations on state and local levels. Of African-American heritage, Prosecutor Carter has earned many firsts: the first elected black judge in Lake County’s history, the first elected black prosecutor in the history of Lake County and the State of Indiana, and the first elected black president of the Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council for two terms.

The Moods, with the sounds of Motown, will provide the entertainment for the afternoon. The Moods are a singing group dedicated to the fine arts of harmony and choreography. They have performed and arranged background vocals for other artists and radio and television commercials. They have performed with and opened for such major talents as the Temptations, the Spinners, Mary Wells, Bernie Mac, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, the Stylistics, the Impressions, the Chi-Lites, and many others. The Hammond NAACP Branch continues to work with every segment of the community to remove barriers for a better quality of life.
